God’s Glory Alone
The culmination of all of the other solas is this final one: which is soli Deo gloria—glory to God alone. I say this is the culmination, because if you take away one sola, you can’t have this last one. In other words, God is glorified when there is an understanding that salvation is attained through Faith alone, by God’s sovereign Grace alone, in Christ alone, according to the Scriptures alone. This final sola is vitally important and the key to truly appreciating our salvation, because giving the glory to God alone is saying that it was God’s irresistible grace that saved us, not our decision in the midst of sin. Soli Deo gloria is all about God, and how HE died for us, and how HE called us out of our sin, and how HE made us alive in Him. Ephesians 2:4-5 says
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
As Christians we must understand that, as Jonathan Edwards put it,
[We] contribute nothing to [our] salvation except the sin that made it necessary.
But God. Soli Deo gloria.
