Shoes
The third piece of armor are the shoes, or rather what goes with your feet. One interesting thing about this piece of armor is that in most translations there is not a physical piece to put on your feet. Though it implies shoes, Paul wanted Christians to be ready for wherever it is God calls them to do. Shoes mark every step you take and protect the bottom of your feet from harsh ground. They equip you to run and move but instead of saying we need to be equipped, Paul says we need to be ready. To protect our spirit, we should walk in the readiness of the gospel of peace. This goes hand in hand with Psalm 85:10 which says,
“Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.”
This represents the connection between the different peaces of armor. When you put on the breastplate of righteousness it becomes easier to walk in the readiness of the gospel.
In my opinion, the term ‘readiness’ represents being willing for anything to happen. As Christians, our prayer should be to live in total surrender to whatever the Lord has for us. We must not be content with knowing the gospel and doing nothing about it. We are called to share that truth with others which we do primarily by our actions in day-to-day life. In proverbs 12:20 peace and joy are said to be joined together, which means that if the Joy of the Lord is our strength, our strength comes from promoting peace (Fighting From a Place of Victory Blog). I encourage you, over the next week, to ask the Lord to help you walk in the readiness of the gospel of peace in order to act as a light to those around you.
